A blaze broke out at a preferred canteen on the iconic Gwyer Corridor hostel in Delhi College on Friday morning, fireplace officers stated, including that no casualties had been reported within the incident.

In response to officers, the hearth broke out on the Shri Meenakshi South Indian Cafe (SMSIC), a preferred eatery that serves south Indian meals and snacks, and unfold to the celebrated Pandit Ji canteen, earlier than it was introduced beneath management.
“We received a call about the fire in Delhi University at 10.54 am. Four fire tenders were rushed to the spot, but the fire had already spread to the entire canteen (SMSIC) and it was gutted. Luckily, nobody was injured,” Delhi Fireplace Companies (DFS) chief Atul Garg stated.
Officers stated they believe {that a} gasoline leakage or a brief circuit inside SMIC led to the hearth.
“Both canteens are close to each other. SMIC caught fire first and was completely gutted in the fire. The second canteen, Pandit Ji’s canteen, was also partially gutted in the fire. The seating area was not impacted. The fire had been controlled by then,” stated a fireplace officer, on situation of anonymity.
Gwyer Corridor, established 86 years in the past, is among the oldest hostels in Delhi College. The Pandit Ji canteen opened for enterprise round 70 years in the past, whereas SMSIC has been working for lower than a decade.
Gwyer Corridor warden Kamakhya Tiwary informed HT “We believe the fire started due to a leakage in the gas pipes, because the pipes were broken by monkeys… Luckily, no students were inside.”
